Abstract
Soy bean, millet and salvia seeds produced in the previous year in a pot culture in which nine levels of carrier free P-32 solution (ranging from 1.09¡¿10^(-4) to 1.09¡¿10©ù¥ìc/pot in soy bean, from 0.65¡¿10^(-4) to 0.78¡¿10©ù¥ìc/pot in millet and salvia) has been introduced immediately before florescence into each plant stem through absorbent cotton thread, were used for germination test and water culture in order to observe the residual effect of P-32 applied in the previous year, and the following results were obtained;
1. The germination rate of soy bean seeds was found higher at medium level P-32 treatment and lower at high level than the control.
2. Soy bean seeds derived from plants treated with low level P-32 in the previous year seemed to germinate faster, whereas those of high level P-32 treatment slower than the control. The seeds of medium P-32 level showed no difference when compared with the control.
3. The highest P-32 level rendered both germination and initial growth of young soy bean plants unsatisfactory and furthermore chlorosis was also observed.
4. The germination rate of millet seeds showed no difference among the treatments.
5. The millet seeds of high P-32 plot showed slower germination than the control.
6. The germination rate of salvia seeds was promoted in the plot of medium P-32 level particularly in that of 0.65¡¿10^(-1)¥ìc/pot.
No damaging effect was observed.
7. The radiosensitivity in terms of germination rate is highest in soy bean followed by salvia and millet.
8. The initial linear growth of young soy bean plants was inhibited in the plot of highest P-32 level, whereas the promoting effect was observed in the other plots, the medium level plot in particular.
9. The dry matter produced by the young soy bean plants was promoted in leaves and stem in medium level plot, whereas no difference was observed in root.
10. The dry weight of young millet straw of treated plots showed no difference compared with the control. The dry weight of root showed, on the contrary, both stimulative and damaging effect in medium and high level plots respectively.
11. In the linear growth of millet plants in water culture no difference was observed among treatments.
